When it comes to landing pages, it’s not about casting a wide net and hoping for the best. Instead, it’s all about zeroing in on your ideal audience, those who truly need and want your product or service.
When I started building lead generation funnels and sales funnels, I was getting right around 10-15% conversion rates… sometimes over 25% if I was having a good day. But I honestly had no idea why. It was always a fluke.
By targeting a specific niche, I have managed to achieve conversion rates ranging from an impressive 44% to a mind-blowing 90%! This has been a process of combining the right niche with what I’ve learned and practicing with landing page design for conversions, but non the less… your niche matters.
Targeting your niche involves customizing your landing pages with the right imagery, the right copy with the right tone of voice and the right flow to the page so that your ideal niche feels right at home. If your ideal niche target is a lover of all things comic books and your landing page doesn’t have any of the visual or written signals that this page is specifically for that crowd, you’re going to see pretty much all that traffic bounce faster than you ever thought possible. And your conversion numbers will be garbage.
Importance of Having the Right Audience
One key concept I’ve learned is that it’s not about attracting a large number of people who may not be interested. It’s about attracting the RIGHT audience — the individuals who align perfectly with your offering. By narrowing your focus, you increase opt-in rates and overall sales rates. It’s like a laser beam that cuts through the noise and reaches those who truly need what you have to offer.
Consistency in messaging is vital, especially when it comes to appealing to your ideal client. It’s essential to talk to the same ideal client consistently across various platforms and channels. By doing so, you create a strong bond and establish credibility. Consistency builds trust, and trust leads to higher conversion rates.
Reaching the wrong audience can be detrimental to your business. Your product or service may not resonate with those individuals, leaving you with lackluster results despite having a large number of people viewing your content. It’s crucial to avoid strategies and tactics that inadvertently attract the wrong audience and instead put your energy into attracting the right one.
Buying Your Way In vs. Building Your Way In
There are two main approaches to growing a business: buying your way in or building your way in.
While paid advertising can yield quick results, it may not be effective if you lack a niche or a target audience. You’re essentially giving Meta or Google money to try and find your audience for you without enough guardrails OR enough data on who your ideal client or niche is to help you establish what those guardrails are.
One of my clients experienced this challenge when they began their business journey. They paid for an external source to build an audience for them using paid ads, but struggled to gain any traction at all. In fact, their business even stalled, which was a gut punch after all thousands of dollars they had spent. It was only when they combined paid advertising with organic efforts that things started to fall into place.
Here’s my preferred strategy: Use organic marketing strategies to attract your audience and when that’s established, compliment your growth with paid ads that will have a better result because you’ll have a good sense of who you need to reach.

To make any marketing strategy effective, it’s critical to understand your target audience’s pain points, behaviors, and social media presence. By broadcasting your message in the right places, at the right time, with the right messaging, you significantly increase the chances of converting leads into loyal customers. Crafting specific and direct content on your website reduces confusion and attracts the right audience, resulting in higher subscriptions, opt-ins, sales, and closing rates.
In their eagerness to get their businesses off the ground, new entrepreneurs often overlook the importance of their niche and the impact of not having one. They dive right in and refine their approach later… hoping it’s going to “all work out in the end”. And sure, this works sometimes but not enough times for it to be a financially viable strategy or one that consistently gets results.
And before you say “perfect is the enemy of good”, I’m not touting perfection at all. I certainly didn’t wait until everything was perfect before I got started trying to grow my business. But I did have major setbacks when I didn’t at least put the time and effort into being more strategic.
While the mindset of “good is good enough” has its merits in some aspects of business, neglecting the niche conversation can be detrimental. It’s like opening a grocery store without a business plan; you risk attracting the wrong types of customers and miss out on the true potential of your business.

Organizing events as a growth tactic in your business is a common strategy, but their success heavily depends on niche targeting. Without a specific focus and target audience in mind, an event can attract a wide range of people who may not align with the purpose of the gathering.
As a result, only a small percentage of attendees may be relevant, leaving you with poor attendance numbers despite the overall quantity. And then when you go to make an offer to that audience, the results will almost always be dismal.
The Art of Targeting the Right Audience in Content Creation
By now, you know that when creating content, it’s crucial to understand who your target audience is. Take a deep dive into your past successful content and ask yourself who it resonated with and who benefited the most. Aligning your content with your intended target audience ensures that you are attracting those who stand to gain the most from your product or service. Failure to identify your correct target audience indicates a potential niche problem that needs addressing.
Let’s face it: Attracting the wrong audience for your product or service is counterproductive. I’ve encountered situations where clients wanted to sell high-ticket items, such as a $25,000 mastermind, but ended up attracting an audience that couldn’t afford it. By taking a closer look at the targeting strategy and being intentional with social media presence, we can avoid such pitfalls and maximize our efforts.
The Slow and Intentional Path to Targeting a Different Audience
Transitioning from one target audience to another is not an overnight process. It requires time, effort, and targeted strategies to attract the right audience before making significant changes. Gradual and intentional niche transitions allow for smoother adjustments and foster long-term success.
Finding your niche and targeting the right audience is key to standing out in today’s crowded online landscape. Large corporations understand the importance of precise targeting and intention in their marketing efforts, and we as individuals and small businesses should follow suit.
